Hong Kong’s chief executive to be elected through secret ballot

In a secret ballot on Sunday, an election committee of almost 1,200 members will choose which one of three candidates – all of whom are former public servants – will be Hong Kong’s new chief executive.

In 2014, China ruled that people in Hong Kong could elect their chief executive but only if candidates were first vetted by a nominating committee approved by Beijing – a move Hong Kong rejected.
